In class we analysed the opening of 3 M. Night. Shyamalan films. These included The Sixth Sense, The Village and Lady in the Water.
The Sixth Sense
- Quite ambient sound
- Slow paced fading titles
- Suspenseful backing music
- White font against dark background
- Long held first shot - character engagement
The Village
- Suspenseful backing music
- Sound before images
- White font against dark background
- Music pace quickens, titles shorter
- Flashes of trees bleeding through background
- Long held first shot - audience engagement
- Low shot - powerful character established.
Lady in the Water
- Suspenseful quite music
- White titles over dark background
- Black and white animation - contrasting - similar to titles
- Engaging over voice
- Long held first shot - audience engagement
From this analysis common traits can be seen, these include:
- Sound before action
- White titles over dark background
- Suspenseful quite music - common to genre
- Long held first shot - character engagement
This activity has influenced my groups ideas about our opening. We believe we can drastically improve our work from looking at M. Night Shyamalan.
